My name is Alexia and I’m 24 years old and I have been working as a nanny now for almost a year! Before that I was an au pair for 3 years. I love kids so for me going with an agency like Swedish Connection was a great opportunity as I didn’t really know anything at all about living in another country or family when I first arrived. They made it really easy and complication-free and they helped me with basically everything!

It’s a really big difference working as a nanny instead as an au pair. You work full time (45-50h), meaning whole days and not a few hours in the morning and afternoon, you often live out, meaning you don’t live with the family. It’s nice living with the family in the beginning stages but you have so much more freedom living by yourself or with friends (and it’s more fun)! I have learnt to schedule and be flexible and creative by arranging activities for the kids and not just be home the whole day.

As an au pair you’re more of a friend/ role model to the kids but being a nanny for me is like being their big sister, helping the family raise the kids and make a real difference! I travel to work every day and then I drive the kids to school. It was a big change and a very scary thought that I was going to drive on the different side of the road but it was so easy, so always have your mind open and at least try and see how it feels!

June 2020

The first five months of my year as a nanny has gone by fast. It didn’t quite go as I thought it would, but not in a bad way (covid19 kind of put on hold all experiences with crowds). The agency helped me find an amazing family on the first try and I couldn’t be happier with it.

I usually work three days a week plus two nights babysitting. My normal workdays start with getting the children ready for school and nursery, with lunch and packed bags. Thereafter I have some free time and then the youngest, who’s three years old, gets picked up and we play until the other two, who’re nine and eleven, has to be picked up from school. Usually the older children have after school activities that I take them to and while they’re there it’s more playtime for me with the youngest. Later it’s back home to make supper, bath time and bedtime. The older kids are awake longer and we often spend the evenings playing some kind of game.

During my spare time I spend a lot of time with my nose between book pages, but I also enjoy going for walks around London, photography, crochet, drawing and meeting friends. My host family is very keen to make sure I have a good time while I’m here and often invites me to join movie and game nights, outings and trips to the grandparents. I feel like a part of the family and can’t wait to see what the rest of my year will turn out to be.

So happy I took this step in my life and I’ll forever treasure the memories I make here with all these people!

June 2020

Hi my name is Cornelia and I'm now 21 years old. My time as an au pair and second year as a returning au pair has been like nothing else. I started in 2018 and spent a year au pairing, then I travelled for half a year before coming back as a returning au pair because I just wasn't finished with London. Both times I went with Swedish Connection and I'm so happy I did. I got all the help I needed to feel safe and comfortable. They also helped me so much when I came to a family that wasn't right for me. They supported me with the change and even though it was a scary experience I then met the most amazing family that are now very dear to me.

Swedish Connection helped me through all of that and I feel like I've grown so much as an adult by being an au pair. I learned what it means to take care of children and also got to have so much fun at the same time. The friends I met in London are some of my best ones. It's great going through an agency because at first I had them as a safety net and met lots of other au pairs and as time went on and I gained confidence I also became friends with people I met on nights out, uni students and such.

There is always something new to do in London and so many fun and cool places just a train ride away if you want to see something else. The summer is filled with festivals and winter has Winter Wonderland and so many Christmas markets. There are always people ready to go out and dance or go to a poetry cafe. London is now my second home and even though I just moved back to Sweden to start studying I have so many great friends and of course my host families I'm going to need to go back and visit!
